Tides; an Original (ft. Emma Campelle)
Vocalist: Emma Campelle
Producer/songwriter: Abby Hayden
Acoustics played by Abby Hayden
I wrote “Tides” in 8th grade when I had to leave all of my friends to go to a new school. In order to overcome this challenge, I wrote this song to express how I was feeling. The lyrics within the piece mean a lot to me, and it was an amazing experience to watch it come to life. The song was produced in a digital audio workstation called Logic Pro. It was my first time using this software. Within the piece, I used pitch corrector and flex to adjust Emma’s vocals and automation to even out the volume of the ukulele. A lot of thought went into this project. From the location of recording to the ideal microphone adjustment, everything had to line up. Emma and I worked in the studio for several hours recording and editing takes.

"Ghost" by Johnny Stimson (cover)
Vocalist / Producer / Instrumentals: Abby Hayden
Song: "Ghost" by Johnny Stimson
"Ghost" by Johnny Stimson has always been one of my favorite songs. I have always found the filtered solo vocals at the beginning of the song really cool. I decided to replicate the same kind of sound with a vocoder (a digital signal processor that applies a filter on a sound based on the frequency characteristics of a second sound). I took my own voice and imposed it on a musical synthesizer, which resulted in a talking instrument effect. This piece was made from scratch; I recorded everything myself from vocals to instrumentals. Also, I decided to add my own personal touch by writing an outro that went along with the song.

murky eyes; an original
Vocalist / Producer / Instrumentals / Lyrics: Abby Hayden
Murky Eyes is an original that I wrote and produced myself. Everything you hear in the piece either came from my voice, the grand piano stored away in the school band room, or my old ukulele that always falls out of tune. It’s raw… as raw as you can get, I guess. The lyrics come from the heart. This project was originally due in the beginning of January, but here I am four months later. It was more than just a school music project. It’s a story. My story,,, and hopefully others out there will here this song and realize that they are not alone. Murky eyes stand as a symbol to me. However, I am not going to tell you what they symbolize. I want you to determine that for yourself. The murky eyes that haunt the minds of people are not limited to one specific idea. You can decide what this song means to you; whether it is about the struggle against anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences, loneliness and isolation.
The murky eyes follow me might not be the murky eyes that follow you.
It’s all about perspective.
The way I get rid of the murky eyes is through creation. I create music. I create art. I create literature. I channel the disappointments back into my craft. When battling hard times, music seems to hold everything together. It seems to make things not so chaotic. It helps me make sense of both the world and me.
When I express myself through music, I feel that I am taking something dark and turning it into something beautiful. Something that people can relate to.
Music unites people. You are not alone
Now to the technical stuff:
In Murky Eyes, the lyrics and acoustics are all originals by me. I altered the Channel EQ and used the Space Designer feature to add to the song’s mood. Along with that, I also used reverb, panning, and automation. I recorded the vocals, piano, and ukulele live in the studio in multiple takes. After that, I spent a lot of time organizing each track so that it ran smoothly. The song took me a really long time to finish, but overall, I am happy with its result. Murky Eyes has definitley been my favorite project so far.
